aschine is a beat-production workstation with built‑in drum sequencing, sampling and loop slicing, and is the latest result of NI's initiative to build hybrid hardware and software instruments. The software element runs as a stand‑alone application or as an AU/VST/RTAS plug‑in, while the hardware is a controller for the Maschine software, and also functions as a general‑purpose MIDI controller.

Sound libraries (library content) are “instruments” that load into apps like Kontakt 5 or Reaktor 6. For instance, Alicia’s Keys is a sound library and Kontakt 5 is its Player Engine, however, not all instruments use sound libraries. For example, “Form” is a synthesizer and does not have a sound library but it’s still an instrument that loads into Reaktor 6. Other apps like Absynth 5, FM8, and Massive are also synthesis based and do not use additional library content.
Native Instruments sound libraries take a lot of hard drive space. It’s best to store them on either an external drive or a separate internal drive. Installing libraries to the same drive as your operating system will decrease performance (slow things down) and take up a lot of space!
